POSITION SUMMARY: 

As a Tool Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing tooling, fixturing, jigs, gauges and support equipment for production or research & development, considering such factors as accessibility, economy, mobility, and performance requirements. It also entails designing, organizing, implementing, and controlling activities related to tooling needs of Engineering and Operations. Tooling support for engineering and operations include new product development tools, inspection tools, production tool refurbishment and production tool improvements. While working closely with a fast-paced, agile team that produces high-performance and quality of Aircraft Auxiliary Equipment for the warfighter.

 

This position requires a strong background in aerospace manufacturing, tooling design with an emphasis on pneumatic, mechanical, and electro-mechanical components, assemblies, preferably for use in military or commercial aviation.  Works under limited supervision.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Designing, organizing, implementing, and controlling activities related to tooling needs of Engineering and Operations
  • Tooling support for engineering and operations include new product development tools, tool inspection, production tool refurbishment and production tool improvements
  • Must be flexible and be able to work in a fast-paced environment in groups or individually
  • Designs manufacturing tools, fixtures and jigs as required to ensure product designs with tight tolerances can be repeatedly manufactured. Analyzes part and assembly specifications and drawings to ensure tool design provides desired results.
  • Develops tooling design concepts, executes tool designs and deploys tooling to aid in production processes and satisfies product build requirements. Manages tool design queue.
  • Creates complete tooling drawings that will be made in-house or through suppliers and checks designs for compliance with safety, producibility, maintainability, reliability, ergonomic factors, and regulatory requirements
  • Creates purchase requests and usage instructions for tooling and coordinates with suppliers and external resources needed in developing and implementing new tooling
  • Evaluates and implements suggestions from manufacturing engineering, design engineering and production personnel to improve tooling, part handling, process controls and assembled part performance and tool life

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical design or drafting or related concentration a minimum of 10 years experience in relevant tool design, preferably for military or commercial aviation. The candidate should have knowledge of manufacturing of mechanical components and assemblies with emphasis in complex electromechanical systems, or large structures.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in creation of design tool concepts using hand sketches, and CAD tools.  CAD experience in CATIA V5 (preferred) and PDM SmarTeam is a plus.
  • Must have previous knowledge of assembly fixture design practices and inspection fixture design criteria of ASME Y14.43-LATEST standard.
  • Proficient in creating detail drawings, assembly drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.100-LATEST standard.
  • Proficient in Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) using ASME Y14.5-LATEST standard and stack-up analysis.
  • Experience of Military standards and compliance rules and regulations mandated under the following quality and governmental standards: AS9100 & ITAR.
  • Aircraft/aerospace tooling and product development background is required.
  • 3D printing in PLA, composite and/or metal experience is a plus.

 

  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques and use of machinery including Programming of NC machines
  • Experience in design of jigs, fixtures and tooling used for assembly of the final product.
  • Must have knowledge of materials and metals processing, including Heat Treat and Coatings for aerospace requirements.
  • Must be able to perform measurement and inspection processes.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Must be fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Experience of Microsoft products is essential.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

  • Medium-to-large office environment
  • Must be flexible and be able to work in a fast-paced environment in groups or individually.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Exposed to a combination of normal office type environments.

 

SALARY RANGE:

 

Use Salary Range (Inglewood only): $100,000.00 to $140,000.00 yearly
